Kalimdor Zone Changes

Today I am kicking off a two-part series of entries regarding the MAJOR changes to the old zones in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms. Minor changes will not be noted. There will probably be SPOILERS, so if you're not interested in that sort of thing, you should probably not check this out.

DUROTAR:  Durotar is one of the more famous zones for the fact that Orgrimmar is in it.  The horde capitol itself has got a nice facelift, since Garrosh didn't deem it scarey enough.  Most of the buildings are now decked out in very Warsong Hold-esque steel.  The zeppelin towers have been moved into the city, so alliance may find it a little more difficult to hitch a ride on them.  As for the rest of Durotar, Bladefist Bay now has a dock which can transport you to Vashj'ir, Southfury River is overflowing, Thunder Ridge is now flooded, with the Thunder Lizards drowned, and the Alliance have invaded, securing Northwatch Hold once more, and taking the Kolkar Crag.  And as you know, the Darkspear Trolls have reclaimed the Echo Isles.  One last thing:  Razor Hill now has a flightpath.

THE BARRENS:  The cataclysm has rent The Barrens in half, separating the now Northern Barrens and Southern Barrens by a large, volcanic, fissure.  The Northern Barrens hasn't changed much, except for the huge crack in the ground.  But the Southern Barrens has changed DRASTICALLY.  The work of Naralex in The Wailing Caverns has not gone forgotten, as now a large portion of the Southern Barrens is covered by lush forests.  THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING as large tentacle-like vines have sprung out of the ground and are choking innocent Tauren, who "liked the Barrens when they were... Barren!".  Fighting between the Horde and Alliance has broken out in the center of the zone, with a large battlescarred crater with planes circling above is now prominent between the two factions' fortresses.  Camp Taurajo has been raided and levelled, leaving few survivors, and the Tauren have barricaded the entrance to Mulgore with a huge gate.

AZSHARA: Azshara is one of the two zones you can enter after Durotar, the other being the Northern Barrens.  Azshara has been taken over by the Horde, but mostly the Goblins of Kezan.  There is an ongoing battle between the Nightelves and the Horde at the entrance to the zone, which is at a quarry near a new third entrance to Orgrimmar, which leads into Azshara.  One of the main forms of transportation around the zone is a Goblin-made highway, on which you travel with ROCKETS.  It kicks ass.  You may also note that the zone is now strangely shaped like the Horde insignia...

MULGORE:  The Brambleblade Quillboars from the Brambleblade Ravine have amassed and attacked the Tauren Camp Narache, killing many Tauren.  A new zone, Farseer Rise has been placed to the west of Camp Narache.  The Dwarves of the Bael'Dun Digsite are all dead, replaced by earth elementals.  There aren't many changes to this zone.

 Farseer Rise

STONETALON MOUNTAINS:  A volcano has erupted in the Charred Vale, spilling lava into the sea.  Malaka'Jin has become an expanded quest hub with it's own flightmaster.  Battle between the Alliance and the Horde has broken out in the Windshear Crag, driving the Venter Co. out of most of the area.  The horde questline for this area involves dropping an atomic bomb on a peacful, druidic, tree, showing just how corrupted the horde has become in the absence of Thrall.

Lava Spilling Out of the Charred Vale

ASHENVALE: The Horde has a stronger hold in Ashenvale, having taken and deforested Silverwing Refuge, upgraded their defenses in Zoram'Gar Post, and is currently sieging Astranaar, Raynewood Retreat, and Maestra's Post.  Not to say that the Alliance hasn't been busy here either, taking half of the Warson Lumber Camp and attacking Splintertree Post.  A large volcano has erupted in the northern region of the zone, causing devastation to the forests around it.

Deforestation

DARKSHORE:  Shortly after the cataclysm, and massive tsunami hit the coast.  Despite being warned, many Nightelves stayed put in Auberdine, most of which are now dead and the city is now in ruins (*Cough*Cough*Katrina*Cough*).  Most of the zone is now flooded.  Malfurion Stormrage has entered into the eye of a massive cylcone in the center of the region, trying to commune with the spirits to calm it.  The Darkspear Trolls have emerged from their secret dancing troll party to do battle with the Nightelves and the Worgen.

THOUSAND NEEDLES:  The cataclysm caused the sea to pour into Thousand Needles, drowning the Centaurs and most of the wildlife.  The Great Lift was destroyed by the incoming tide.  The Grimtotem Tauren have taken over Freewind Post, and the Horde Tauren and Alliance Nightelves are working in conjunction to drive them away.  A giant seabarge now navigates the waters where the Salt Flats once were, piloted by Goblins AND Gnomes.  The Twilight Cultists can be found in their camps on the new southern "coast" of the zone.  And don't worry, The Mirage Raceway may be flooded, but you can still get your Ancona Chicken.  Magus Tirth is dead, but his assistant is still alive and willing to sell you the chicken to the north of the Salt Flats.  Amusingly, he blames the Cataclysm on his master.

DESOLACE:  A large lush area named the Cenarion Wetlands has appeared in the centre of the zone, near the Kodo Graveyard.  The new vegetation stretches to Ghostwalker Post and Scrabblescrew's Camp, along with some fresh water making an appearance in the zone.  The Bloodelves have made their way to Desolace, setting up a small camp near Ethel Rethor.  The Magram Centaur have taken over and fortified the Kolkar Village, and the faction quest line between the Magram and Gelkis Centaur is no longer available.  The northern hills of the Valley of Spears have collapsed into the ocean, and the Naga are being attacked by a large elite elemental named Lord Hydronis.

TANARIS:  The northeastern coast has been flooded, submerging Steamwheedle Port and the entire northeastern area, making Gadgetzan a port town.  Many of the mountains east of Uldum have collapsed, allowing easier access to Land's End Beach.  The Gates to Uldum have now opened, and a second entrance into the zone as available near Thistleshrub Valley.  You wanna know about Uldum?  You just wait.

Now, of course all of the other Kalimdor zones (with the exception of Azuremyst and Bloodmyst Isle) have had terrain updates, and EVERY zone has had a complete overhaul on their questlines, making for a much more enjoyable questing experience. Yes, even the level 1-5 areas are fresh and new.  Blizzard makes use of the phasing feature for most if not all the zones in one way or another, and the vehicles too!  (But not TOO much on the vehicles.  They learned from their mistakes in WotLK as WotLK learned from it's mistakes in BC, and so on.)  Stay tuned for Eastern Kingdoms (+Kezan and Lost Isles) coming either Friday or later next week!  Afterward, I'll showcase the level 78-85 zones.

Cataclysm Lore Updates. (CONTAINS MANY SPOILERS)

There has been ALOT of updates to the story with the release of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, as you may imagine.  If you aren't interested in getting SPOILED before Cataclysm releases, then I suggest that you do not read this post, as it contains LOTS AND LOTS OF SPOILERS.  Lets kick it off.

NUMBER ONE:  Warchief Thrall steps down from his post to help control the now-churning Malestrom and leaves Garrosh in charge.

Thrall's Placeholder Model, and the Maelstrom.

NUMBER TWO: Cairne Bloodhoof doesn't believe that Garrosh is doing so great of a job at managing the Horde, and challenges him to a battle.  After losing, Cairne is severely weakened and dies due to being poisoned by the Grimtotems.  After a long battle to retake Thunder Bluff (This may be a quest), Garrosh and Baine Bloodhoof (Cairne's Son) succeed, Garrosh leaving Baine to head the Tauren.

NUMBER THREE: After a dispute between Garrosh and the Troll leader, Vol'Jin, the trolls are banished from Orgrimmar, taking up residence in the newly reclaimed Echo Isles, which are now troll training grounds.

NUMBER FOUR: Magni Bronzebeard sacrifices himself to the earth elementals to protect Ironforge from the cataclysm, becoming incased in crystal.  His daughter, Moira Thaurissian, takes charge of Ironforge.  However, she is also the the official head of the Dark Iron Dwarves, being the widow of King Thaurissian.  She unites the Council of the Three Hammers, which consists of herself, and two representatives of the Bronzebeard Dwarves and the Wildhammer Clan, Muradin Bronzebeard and Kurdran Wildhammer.  As the council moves in, the Gnomes are kicked out on their asses, to go rebuild Gnomeregan.  Also, the Ironforge Airway has finally opened.

NUMBER FIVE: After accepting aid from the Nightelves, Genn Greymane and the other Worgen successfully defended Gilneas from the invading Forsaken.  However, they still flee to Darnassus, where they get a new district.

 The Howling Oak

NUMBER SIX:  After the defeat of the Lich King the Val'kyr where "unemployed".  Sylvanas welcomes them into the Forsaken for their ability to create new undead.  Previously, the forsaken could not procreate, and were dying out (personally, I thought the race was popular enough ;D).  After Garrosh catches wind of this he exclaims "What difference is there between you and the Lich King now!", to which Sylvanas replies, "Isn't it obvious?  I serve the Horde".  Next follows Garroshes infamous line, "Watch your smart mouth, bitch".  Afterward he storms off.  (I have a feeling that Blizzard may censor or remove the curseword.)

NUMBER SEVEN: Malfurion Stormrage returns to protect the World Tree from Ragnaros.

Malfurion and HIS BEARD.

People that haven't really changed:

Jaina Proudmoore - Same Place, Same thing.
Regent Lord Lor'Themar Theron - Still the leader of Silvermoon, still pretty useless.
The Prophet Velen - Still in the Exodar, still pretty useless
Rhonin - Still in Dalaran, that's pretty much it.

That's just to name a few.

Cataclysm Graphical Updates.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is arguably the largest expansion of WoW ever.  It revamps the old world and the new, adding five new beautiful zones, and drastically changing many of the older zones.  Since the Fall of the Lich King on Patch 3.3.3 or whatever, World of Warcraft has begun to continue it's story, instead of simply retell the Warcraft Trilogy.  Cataclysm does not "ruin lore" as many on the forums would claim.  It is creating a more immersive environment for newer players, as well as forward the lore for the old.  One of the most important parts of immersion is the asthetic of the scenery around you.  At BlizzCon 2009 it was announced that you will be able to have a view distance 3X as large as the farthest you could view when Vanilla first shipped.  This is all great and gravy, but I think the most impressive graphical update that comes with Cataclysm is the water.  If you've seen it you'll agree, and if you haven't, you soon will.

Here is the old water:

And here is the new:

As you can see, the water washes onto and off of shore, the waves and wakes look more realistic and painterly, and objects beneath the water's surface are distorted.  It even reflects the sun and moon.

Well, the water looks great, now what else?  Well, well, settle down, my little forum troll.  What's that?  You want the sky to look cooler?  Well check out these cloud effects.

These are pictures taken from The Vortex Pinnacle, a 5-Man dungeon in Uldum.  I have a feeling those cloud effects will be used everywhere.

But what if they're not?  Forum troll, just shut up and enjoy the new sunbeams.

And those are the sunbeams.

Now, the textures will all be getting a facelift as well, but that's not very interesting, so I decided not to post anything about that.

This Looks Shopped...

So, recently I got bored and discovered that my photoshop skills could finally come in handy.  I was looking for something interesting and suitably awesome to use as my signature for the guild forums.  Upon seeing nothing that interested me via a Google search, I whipped out the old image editor and set to work, ripping a posed image of my current character model from the armory.  I gave my character a flaming Stratholme setting for her background, and created some makeshift embers with the program, and it came out looking like this.

After I made the one, I uploaded it to Photobucket and set it as my signature on the site.  But, I figured that once people discovered the sheer awesomeness of the picture, they might want one as well.  I made one for my brother, even though I haven't showed it to him yet, so I don't know if he'll want it.

It's equally epic, if not more.  I like to think that he's bashing a helpless gnome's skull in, but that's just me.  Anyway, that cow is brutally ending something.  For this one, I downloaded some bloodsplatter paintbrushes, and looked up tutorials for making smoke and making text glow.  The setting's in front of the Auchindoun in the Terokkar Forest's Bonewastes.

Afterward, I posted a thread on the guild forums advertising that I am willing and able to create these images for my fellow guildmates.  I will gradually get better at this, so I'm excited.

In The Beginning....

Well, this is something that I've been wanting to do for a long time.  Start a blog.  Now, if you do not know me in World of Warcraft, I am Jasca of Kirin Tor, US.  If you do not play World of Warcraft, and have somehow stumbled upon this site, I suggest you leave, as this is a very World of Warcraft oriented site.  *Waits for infidels to leave*

Okay, now that they are gone, let's get down to business, shall we?  Primarily for now I will be discussing news from my guild, Dirty Hordes, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm beta updates, and general World of Warcraft news and updates.

Now that that is out of the way, I am going to put a link to this blog on my guild's site.  We are currently recruiting, and if you are a REALLY casual horde raider on Kirin Tor, US who does not mind a shortage of raids until Cataclysm's release, then I suggest you sign up here.

Now then, it is current 2:14 in the AM in my neck of the woods, and I'm pretty damn tired.  Good night.
